OERG: The Old English Reading Group

Posted on 21/02/2013

The Bayeux Tapestry (detail)

Run by Dr Jennifer Neville, The Old English Reading Group offers the opportunity to practise reading Old English aloud and discuss it in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Texts are provided, recently having included The Wanderer, Beowulf, Gerefa, several of the Exeter Book Riddles, Deor, The Fortunes of Men, The Seafarer, and Judith.

The group occasionally produces written translations from discussions of texts. These can be quite free, as they reflect the personal preoccupations and interests of members of OERG, as well as the compromises necessary in group work. Members of the group have recently presented papers at the International Medieval Congress in Leeds, and the group also held its own 'OERG International Conference' in 2010.

The group meets on Fridays, 10-11am in MBS0-08 (in the new Management Building), and is looking at a new text, Guthlac. All year groups and levels of expertise are welcome.
