Dickens Universe

Professional Development Opportunity

Scholarship to Attend the Dickens Universe, University of California, Santa Cruz, 15-21 July 2018.

The Department of English at Royal Holloway is affiliated to the International Dickens Project based at the University of California, Santa Cruz. As part of our affiliation we select one graduate student each year to attend the annual Dickens Universe - see http://dickens.ucsc.edu/universe/. The Dickens Universe is a week-long summer school at Santa Cruz which is usually dedicated to a different Dickens novel each year. This year, the chosen novel is Little Dorrit. The Dickens Universe brings together leading international scholars, graduate students from the most prestigious institutions in the US, UK, and beyond with high-school teachers and interested members of the public. The result is an intensive and enjoyable programme of lectures, seminars, films, performances in the remarkable setting of the California redwoods on the UCSC campus.

Graduate students are eligible for and expected to select a variety of professionalizing activities which include writing workshops, running seminars for high-school teachers, workshops on presentation skills and many other formal and informal opportunities for development. The Department covers the travel expenses, accommodation and registration fees of the nominated student.
We invite applications from eligible candidates which will be considered by the Head of Department, the Director of Graduate Studies (Research) and two staff members with a special interest in this field. Graduates working on all periods of literature are welcome to apply as the professionalization opportunities are valuable for all students. Applications should take the form of a covering letter, outlining why you are a suitable candidate for this nomination, the relevance of the Dickens Universe to your research interests and what you hope to gain from attending in 2018. This should be accompanied by a brief CV and abstract of your thesis. Please submit all applications by email attachment to Lisa Dacunha (lisa.dacunha@rhul.ac.uk), ensuring your email contains the subject line ‘Dickens Universe Application’, by Friday 9 February 2018.
