The Gawain-Poet (EN2006 & EN3005)

Summer Reading List

Course Tutor: Dr Ruth Kennedy

Set Text

Malcolm Andrew and Ronald Waldron, The Poems of the Pearl Manuscript, revised 5th edn (Exeter: Exeter University Press, 2007). You can get earlier editions very cheaply via bookfinder.com, but this one has been totally revised and has a CD with translation, etc., so it is best to try to obtain it.

Further Reading

Really there is everything you could possibly want in the set text, including a translation in the CD that comes with it, and endless bibliography, notes and ideas. However, over the years, these three books are the ones that students have always found the most useful:

  • Ad Putter, An Introduction to the Gawain-Poet (London: Longman, 1996)
  • W. A. Davenport, The Art of the Gawain-Poet (London: Athlone, 1978)
  • Derek Brewer and Jonathan Gibson, A Companion to the Gawain-Poet (Cambridge: D. S. Brewer, 1999)

If you want to start preparing your texts, and really getting to know them, then there are some wide-spaced Word documents of all four texts (not necessarily the same editions as your set texts) that will be put up on Moodle in late July. If you want them before 26th June, email

If you think that you need to brush up your Middle English, then it is recommended that you start with Patience, patiently glossing and understanding it.
