Summer Reading List

Course Tutor: Dr. Douglas Cowie

You can find the full list of books we will read on the course below.  We will read excerpts of the Luc Sante, Dorian Lynskey and Richard Crawford books.  You will need your own copy of the Sante and Lynskey; I will provide photocopies of the relevant sections of the Richard Crawford.  However, America's Musical Life is a long and outstanding book, and it would be well worth your summer if you read the whole thing.  The Dorian Lynskey book is also quite long, and again, worth reading in full before the course starts.

Lester Bangs, Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung

Luc Sante,  Kill All Your Darlings

Studs Terkel, And They All Sang

Greil Marcus, Mystery Train

Richard Crawford, America’s Musical Life

Dorian Lynskey, 33 Revolutions per Minute

Bob Dylan, Chronicles Volume One

Kazuo Ishiguro, Nocturnes

Bernard Maclaverty, Grace Notes

Tiffany Murray, Diamond Star Halo
