Meet our staff


Professor David Howard

Professor David Howard, Head of Department works in the analysis and synthesis of singing, speech and music. Specific areas of interest include: digital speech and singing synthesis based on replicating virtual vocal tracts acquired from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); voice pitch analyses for singing development, detection of babbling in infants to encourage speech learning, the Vocal Tract Organ (a keyboard or human gesture controlled instrument that uses 3D printed vocal tracts on loudspeakers to recreate human vowel sounds), the theoretical and practical analysis of tuning and pitch drift in a cappella (unaccompanied) choral singing and understanding better the scientific 13th century writings of Robert Grosseteste.

Professor Howard is Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET), Senior Member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (Senior MIEEE), Fellow of the Institute of Acoustics (FIOA), Member of the Audio Engineering Society (MAES), Member of the British Association of Academic Phoneticians (MBAAP) and Member of the British Voice Association.

Dr Stefanie Kuenzel

Dr Kuenzel completed an MEng degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Imperial College London and was awarded a Power Academy Scholarship, being partnered with National Grid, UK. Through this scheme she gained work experience at multiple National Grid offices (Warwick, Leeds and Wokingham). Between 2010 and 2014 she worked on her PhD at Imperial College, titled Modelling and control of an ACDC system with significant generation from wind. This research was supported by an EPSRC studentship and National Grid. She was a visiting researcher at the University of Duisburg and worked with Imperial Consultants regarding the North Sea power grid vision for Norwegian power grid operator, STATNETT, Norway, 2012.

Following her PhD, she worked as a post-doctoral Research Associate in the Control and Power Group of Imperial College London, working in collaboration with National Grid UK. Her research interests include HVDC transmission systems and wind generation and the impact of integration into AC systems. Currently she is the Head of the Power Systems Group and a visiting researcher in the Control and Power Group at Imperial College London.

Dr Kuenzel will teach sustainable energy through wind turbines, and we have a wind turbine planned for the roof of the new building which will be her laboratory, along with solar panels.

Dr Wenqing Liu

Dr Wenqing Liu has a first degree in Physics from Nanjing University and completed a PhD at the University of York. She was an EPSRC research associate at University of Cambridge and a visiting scholar of Hong Kong University (HK) and Nanjing University (CN). Her research interest is in the areas of condensed matter physics, spintronics, spin-logic, low-dimensional materials and nano-structures, molecular beam epitaxy, nano-fabrication, electron-microscopy, photoemission, and UHV instrumentation. She is the PI of several UK STFC projects. She is the invited author of the book chapters for Springer Reference “Handbook of Spintronics”, Taylor & Francis “Skyrmion”, and the Current Opinion in Solid State and Material Science Anniversary Special Issue “Magnetic 2D Systems”. She is a member of the editorial board of Nature Scientific Report  and the referee for several journals such as NanoLetters, Europe Physics Letters, and Applied Physics Letters. She is the session chair of the IEEE MMM conference, the committee member of the Advanced Materials & Processing, and the International Conference on Functional Materials.

Dr Liu is the recipient of the KM Stott Memorial Prize for Outstanding Scientific Research (2015), York VC’s Special Award (2013), Head of Department Award (2010), External Engagement Award (2014)Holbeck Award (2010), and Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award (2017). She is a member of IEEE, ACS, and IOP and the assistant director of York-Nanjing Joint Centre (YNJC) for Spintronics and Nanoengineering

Dr Steve Alty

Dr Steve Alty studied for his BEng(Hons) in Electronic Engineering at Liverpool University and subsequently his PhD entitled, "The Classification of Voiceband Signals", at Liverpool John Moores University which was awarded in 1998.  He was a lecturer and then senior lecturer at King's College London until 2011 whereupon he moved to London South Bank University where he progressed to the role of Head of Division of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2015.  He joined Royal Holloway, University of London in 2017 as a senior lecturer and is currently the programme director for the undergraduate degrees in Electronic Engineering.

His research interests include signal processing, machine learning and pattern recognition with applications in biomedical engineering.  Steve is a Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and he is a member of the IEEE Signal Processing and IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Societies.  He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).
