Research in Economics

In the Department of Economics 98 per cent of our research outputs are rated either world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021). With expertise spanning all major areas of economics, our staff dive deep into important problems that affect people today.

What is the impact of automation and artificial intelligence on employment patterns and income inequality? How do education and skill levels influence income inequality and economic mobility? What is the relationship between climate change and economic development? What are the drivers of financial crises, and how can they be mitigated? What impact has the NHS had on population health over the last 75 years?

To address some of the major challenges of our time and deliver impactful research, our staff combine state-of-the-art data analytics and rigorous theoretical frameworks. Our innovative research has an impact throughout society via policy-making institutions, commercial organisations and non-governmental organisations.
