Why Study Economics With Us?

Founded in 1995, the Department of Economics at Royal Holloway, is among the top in the UK for research excellence and focuses on high quality teaching given by specialist staff that are active in their research field. The department offers a variety of single and joint honours undergraduate courses, as well as taught and research postgraduate courses. It is currently home to approximately 600 undergraduate students and 80 postgraduate students.

The department’s track record is excellent, as it has established itself as one of the three major economics research and teaching departments in the London area. We pride ourselves on our location (providing the best of semi-rural Surrey and easy central London access), our open-door education policy and our insistence on small group teaching.

One of the Top Research Centres for Economics

The Department of Economics is committed to providing one of the best programmes in the UK. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), Economics was in the Top 10 with 80% of the Department's research submitted was ranked as world-leading or internationally excellent (rated 3* and 4*).  Giving prominence to research has a direct positive influence on the outcome of teaching given by the Department.

Academic Staff at Frontiers of their Subjects

Staff in the Department have teaching experience at some of the leading research universities in the world, including Brown, Cambridge, LSE, Yale and Harvard and are working at the frontiers of their subjects. Teaching in the department was given a score of 22 out of 24 in the latest rating of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). In both teaching and research, the Department is able to combine enthusiasm of new staff with the solid foundations gained from previously holding posts and completing PhDs at the very best universities.

High Quality Teaching

With staff at the frontiers of their subjects, it guarantees high quality teaching and cutting edge material. Teaching in the department is usually through a series of well-designed lectures, seminars, labs and workshops. All core Economics courses in the first and second year also have optional tutorial sessions running throughout the term to give additional help to students, with extra academic support during the examination period.

Small Group Teaching/Open Door Policy

The staff in the department insist on small group teaching via seminars and workshops to ensure students are well-prepared for their assessments. The department also believes in an open-door education policy to ensure students have the necessary support.  Throughout the degree, every student is assigned an academic staff as their personal advisor, creating a friendly support environment for students.

Student Facilities

As a student at Royal Holloway you will have access to many student facilities offered by the University. The department of Economics offers some additional facilities exclusive for their students.

  • Undergraduate Hub: The department has a dedicated hub for economics undergraduate students. The Hub is used for holding group meetings, holding study sessions, meeting with personal advisors/tutors and used for departmental social events.
  • Experimental Lab: The department’s experimental lab allows the department to teach modern experimental and behavioural economics in a realistic environment that allows students to comprehend and reproduce results of seminal studies or develop their own research ideas.
  • Simulation Trading Floor: The department has a simulation trading floor for students on the MSc Finance course. The room recreates the excitement of a trading floor in an investment bank, giving students valuable hands-on experience. The room has real time data feeding from major stock exchanges into the wall screens and also includes wall clocks, terminals and industry-standard software packages.
  • PhD workspaces: The department has given all Postgraduate Research students a dedicated workspace for their research and studies.

Excellent Career Prospects

90% of graduates from the Department of Economics were in full time employment or further study within six months of graduation, within a variety of organisations including Bloomberg, KPMG, Deloitte, HSBC and the Ministry of Defense.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

The Department regularly hosts social events, and Economics based seminars/talks by Academics, prominent speakers, Industry experts and current and alumni students. The events are focused on creating a community within the department while delivering information which may not necessarily be covered in the classroom.

Economics students have their own Economics society. They hold regular events such as movie nights and social outings, many of which are based on Economic interest.

The Department also run regular Student-Staff Liaison Committee meetings. Staff-Student liaison committee exists to provide a forum for the discussion of matters of interest and concern to staff and students in the working of the Department. This is a great platform for students to become Student Representatives or liaise with their reps to raise any issues, queries or recommendations that they may have within the department, which will be communicated with academic staff.

All students at Royal Holloway can enter the Royal Holloway Passport Scheme, which recognises achievements beyond the classroom such as volunteering, tutoring or becoming a Student Ambassador for the department.

Support for International Students

Royal Holloway International offers a range of in-sessional English language courses and one-to-one consultations to support you if you need a little extra help with your English language skills during your studies. They run sessions throughout the year and these are open to all international students.

Scholarships

The university offers a range of financial support that is targeted at those from low income families, mature students, international students and care leavers, along with a package of scholarships for the most academically gifted. Of course, many students will be eligible for both.
