An academic appeal is the way you can request for a decision made by the College relating to your academic studies to be reconsidered by the deadline given, whether you were formally informed about the decision through Campus Connect (e.g. for end of year assessment results) or by letter (e.g. for assessment offences, outcomes of Fitness to Practise Panels, PhD upgrade attempts).
The appeal process is governed by the Academic Regulations. Please read and consider all of this guidance alongside the relevant regulations carefully before submitting an appeal in order to gain an understanding of whether a formal appeal represents the best way forward for you.
We would like you to be aware that only a small number of appeals are successful because there are very strict grounds which must be met. A successful appeal does not guarantee your results will change.

Please contact your Course Tutor, Personal Adviser, Programme Director, Academic Co-ordinator or Supervisor as appropriate for feedback. Deciding whether to appeal
Sometimes there are much more efficient ways to address your concerns than submitting an appeal.

How to appeal against outcomes of other academic processes
If your appeal is against an outcome of another academic process, please read these guidance pages.
The following appeals would not be considered as valid:
- Appeals against the academic judgement of the examiners, including requests for work to be re-marked.
- This is because there are robust procedures in place to make sure that marking standards are appropriate. If you do not understand why you have received a particular outcome or mark you may wish to discuss this with your Course Tutor, Personal Advisor, Programme Director or the Academic Coordinator, when they are available, who also will be able to discuss your academic progress in more general terms.
- Appeals for special consideration of extenuating circumstances submitted retrospectively (i.e. after your final results have been published).
- The procedure for submitting extenuating circumstances is explained in the Instructions to Candidates and the Extenuating Circumstances – Guidance for Students. If you wish to have your circumstances taken into account, you are expected to submit a request with supporting evidence before the deadline set by your department/school. Requests for special consideration are not permitted after the release of results, and the private or confidential nature of circumstances will not be accepted as grounds for appeal.
- Appeals resulting from a lack of awareness of the relevant College procedures or regulations.
- Students often claim that they simply didn't know about the extenuating circumstances procedure or didn't think it applied to them. It is your responsibility to be aware of all the rules, regulations and procedures of the College and your department/school. Simply not being aware of these or thinking that they do not apply to you are never considered valid grounds for an appeal and will not be accepted. You must read your Student Handbook, Academic Regulations, Instructions to Candidates, and Extenuating Circumstances – Guidance for Students so that you are familiar with the College rules and regulations.
Appeals will not be considered if:
- The appeal is not accompanied by any supporting evidence, including allegations of bias or prejudice on the part of the examiners;
- The appeal is not submitted in writing;
- The appeal is submitted after the deadline without an approved extension;
- The appeal is submitted by someone other than yourself without your written consent;
- The appeal is based on informal assessment of your work, the mark for which has not yet been formally approved by the College Board of Examiners;
- The appeal is vexatious or frivolous. Please note if your appeal is considered to be vexatious or frivolous, you may be subject to disciplinary action under the Student Disciplinary Regulations.
