Pioneering UV laser analysis of ice

Direct analysis of particulate matter in ice has been shown to be viable using the cryo-cell UV-LA-ICPMS at Royal Holloway. The results of a pioneering pilot study by Wolfgang Muller and colleagues in Australia and Denmark were published in JAAS in 2011 (“Direct chemical analysis of frozen ice cores by UV-laser ablation ICPMS”) The paper demonstrates the increased spatial/temporal resolution of this UV laser-based technique which has direct application to the analysis of wind-blown dust or tephra layers in the ice-cores from Greenand and Antarctica.
