Continental Margin Process Analysis, Structures & Stratigraphy

The aims of the 3 years start-up phase of the COMPASS consortium are the design and development of effective interlocking multi-scale models and workflows capable of integrating numerical and analogue experiment techniques for the simulation and tectonostratigraphic analysis of rift basins and conjugate passive margins.

These new multi-scale simulation methods will be applied to the tectono-stratigraphic analysis of case studies of rift basins and passive margin sedimentary basins of South Atlantic margins.

As an interdisciplinary project, an up-to-date web-based Wiki-type knowledge database of continental margin processes and parameters will be developed and rigorously maintained for subscribers incorporating published data and new project results.

The consortium will initially execute six closely integrated PhD projects:

  1. South Atlantic Plate Modelling and Static Paleostress Atlas.
    Products: Plate kinematic model, models of intraplate and plate boundary stresses and velocity fields through time.

  2. Influence of lithosphere extension and mantle flow processes on basement and sedimentary architecture of the Central South Atlantic margins.
    Products: Thermo-mechanical models of lithospheric extension, velocity fields and subsidence histories. Detailed investigation of plume-asthenosphere-lithosphere influences on post-rift uplift and subsidence along the South Brazilian Margin.

  3. Interaction of lithospheric deformation processes, regional tectonic faulting and synkinematic sedimentation in segmented rift basins.

  5. Tectonic and stratigraphic mechanisms of break-up unconformity development.
    Products: Field analogue studies, seismic analysis and numerical forward modelling of break-up unconformity development in the Proterozoic Adenab subgroub (Namibia) and Jurassic-Cretaceous strata of the NW Australian shelf.

  6. Seafloor Depth through Time in the South Atlantic.
    Products: High resolution seafloor age and seafloor depth maps, analysis of regional sediment thickness and dynamic topography, animated tectonic reconstruction of the South Atlantic basin.
