The Department of Drama and Theatre at Royal Holloway, University of London welcomed back a wealth of successful alumni to mingle with students seeking post College advice.

The 'Hob-Nob Night, which took place last Wednesday (25 January), saw successful Royal Holloway drama graduates share their experiences with students preparing to enter the professional industry.

The evening began with a welcome from Karen Fricker, Lecturer in Contemporary Theatre, and a video message from successful comedy duo, and Royal Holloway graduates, Max and Ivan - winners of the Fosters Edinburgh Comedy Award 2011, who have just finished a run at the Soho Theatre in London's West End. This was followed by a Q&A with three alumni who have experienced academic and theatrical success.

Finally, the students were let loose in the Boilerhouse to 'hob-nob' with graduates in discussion groups. The Department of Drama and Theatre provided wine and nibbles to accompany the evening and create a sociable informal atmosphere.

President of the Student Workshop Adam Penny said: “The Hob-Nob Night was a brilliant and inspiring evening for us. It showed us exactly what kind of things this degree can lead on to, as well as meeting people who can relate to what we are going through now.”

There was an excellent turn out from drama alumni who have been successful in a vast range of professions. Students were able to listen to the experiences of actors, directors and theatre makers as well as academic professionals in education, writing and other industries.

Head of the department Dan Rebellato said: “It's always a pleasure to see the extraordinary variety of careers that our graduates go into and it was a real privilege for our current undergraduates to hear firsthand how they made that great leap from university into a career. That so many alumni returned to talk about their work is a very rewarding sign of the affection in which the Department is held by our graduates and we look forward to welcoming them back for similar events in the future.”

A video of the event is now available at the Royal Holloway online video library.
