Generic skills Programme and support

The College has its own Research Support for the Arts and Social Sciences Faculty webpage.

Conference funding

The department runs this grant scheme to provide financial support when you are invited to give a conference paper closely related to the subject of your research. The grant is not available to merely attend a conference or cover travel expenses in general.

The grant is available to all PhD students but it is recommended that students apply for this fund in their 2nd or 3rd year. No more than £300 may be awarded over the course of your study.

You will need approval from your supervisor in writing previous to your request. You must then submit your request to the Director of Graduate Studies via the Senior Faculty Administrator. Once this is approved – you may then make a claim for reimbursement of any expenses retrospectively.

When submitting your claim you need to provide original receipts. The expense claim  and instructions are  and more than one claim form could be submitted but not exceeding the maximum amount. (If your receipts would add up to more, the claim would be capped at £300.)

Postgraduate Research Students

Information for Postgraduate Research Students

Research students at Royal Holloway are valued members of the lively academic community and occupy an important place in the College’s teaching and research activities. For day-to-day concerns and subject-specific research training, your first port of call is the administrator in your departmental office with responsibility for postgraduate students. In addition your department will have a Director of Graduate Studies or Research Student Convenor who you should feel free to consult. The College runs a Generic Skills Programme of training sessions where you will meet students from all disciplines.

Research Centres and Groups

A number of our Research Centres and Groups are interdisciplinary, and all welcome the participation of research students. We are keen to help foster intellectual and social links between postgraduate students and researchers from all disciplines. Find out more about Research Centres and Groups.

Academic Style Guide

The Department requires students to use the MLA referencing system; please click here for a link to a style guide covering the most commonly used type of sources.

Please note that the Departmental Style Guide covers only the most commonly used types of sources. For information on how to reference other types of material, please consult MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th ed. (2009), which also contains invaluable advice about evaluating sources, avoiding plagiarism, conducting research, and using correct punctuation. We strongly advise you to purchase a copy, which will also give you access to additional resources at www.mlahandbook.org.

Further information about MLA referencing can also be obtained from the Bedford/St. Martin’s website, which allows you to download free pdf guides to documenting sources in MLA style.

For helpful advice about grammar, punctuation, syntax, and other elements of writing style, as well as links to other internet resources, consult the following websites:
