Electronic engineering is at the heart of many systems we use on a daily basis, including mobile communications, computers, transport systems, most domestic appliances, TV, radio, music studios and gaming devices.

Studying an MEng Electronic Engineering with a Year in Industry at Royal Holloway, University of London will equip you with the knowledge, practical skills, and confident verbal and written communication abilities that are key to successful industrial team working. The additional year in industry will provide extra insight and experience to embark on a fulfilling career creating technical solutions for an evolving world.

This year will be spent on a work placement. Students are supported by their academic department and the Royal Holloway Careers and Employability Service to find a suitable placement. However, Royal Holloway cannot guarantee that all students who are accepted onto this degree programme will secure a placement, and the ultimate responsibility lies with the student. This year forms an integral part of the degree programme and students will be asked to complete assessed work. The mark for this work will count towards the degree.

All taught modules are worth 15 credit units and there are eight of these in all years except the final year, when there is an individual project worth 60 credit units. Practical project work forms part of many modules where appropriate to the subject area, and it involves solving a problem using theory developed within the module and electronic circuit building and/or software skills as appropriate. Teaching activities will include lectures, workshops and seminars and practical project work will be carried out in groups and individually in purpose-built thinking and fabrication laboratories.

Various assessment methods will be used including examinations for theoretical subjects, formal presentations, reports and practical demonstrations for project work with an additional viva voce examinations for final year individual projects. Students are expected to review lecture material after lectures to support their learning and to preview laboratory scripts before coming to laboratory sessions. Basic to the industrial workplace is group working, where excellent written and verbal communication skills are highly valued and sought after; these will be developed and assessed formally as part of project-based work.

All students will have an allocated Personal Advisor as someone with whom any issues can be discussed to enable appropriate advice and help to be given as appropriate.

Study time

Proportions of study time will vary depending on modules taken, but typically:

Year 1

You will spend 39% of your study time in scheduled learning and teaching activities, and 61% in guided independent study.

Year 2

You will spend 37% of your study time in scheduled learning and teaching activities, and 63% in guided independent study.

Year 3

You will spend 100% of your time on placement.

Year 4

You will spend 29% of your study time in scheduled learning and teaching activities, and 71% in guided independent study.

Assessment


Proportions of assessment types will vary depending on modules taken, but typically:

Year 1

Written exams account for 52% of the total assessment for this year of study, 6% will be assessed through practical exams, and 42% will be assessed through coursework.

Year 2

Written exams account for 44% of the total assessment for this year of study, 6% will be assessed through practical exams, and 50% will be assessed through coursework.

Year 3

Coursework accounts for 100% of the total assessment for this year of study.

Year 4

Written exams account for 6% of the total assessment for this year of study, 24% will be assessed through practical exams, and 70% will be assessed through coursework.

Access to Higher Education Diploma

Pass with 24 Level 3 credits at Distinction and the remaining Level 3 credits at Merit. The Diploma should be in Engineering, Computing or Science with Mathematical content. All Mathematics units must be passed with Distinction.

Please note that the Access to Higher Education Diploma will only be acceptable if the applicant has had a considerable break from education.

The fee for the Year in Industry will be 20% of the tuition fee for that academic year.

*Tuition fees for UK and EU nationals starting a degree in the academic year 2017/18 will be £9,250 for that year, and is shown for reference purposes only. The tuition fee for UK and EU undergraduates starting their degrees in 2018 is controlled by Government regulations, and details are not yet known. The UK Government has also announced that EU students starting an undergraduate degree in 2018/19 will pay the same level of fee as a UK student for the duration of their degree.
