The Engineering Management MSc programme is designed to help you master current and emerging engineering management issues and the management principles that underpin effective business strategies and outcomes.

Balancing academic theory with practical opportunities, this course provides tools to manage sophisticated large, complex and multi-disciplinary projects. You'll develop essential, high level management and financial skills with an emphasis on technology strategy and innovation, strategic management, advances in frontier technologies and new product development in nanotechnology and electronics.

The course will provide you with the understanding and tools to manage financial budgets and understand the bigger picture faced by the wider company.

You will also be exposed to Practical Knowledge from the science behind renewable energy through to the diverse new world of modern consumer technology design for the home.

A strong emphasis is placed on the scientific and technological revolutions underway and the process of technological convergence which have had a major impact on both the older established engineering industries and the younger electronics, wireless, computer, media and creative industries and internet-based start-ups.

Core modules

Introduction to Project Management

An introduction to the fundamentals of the project life cycle and the intricate role of the project manager.

Operations and Quality Management

A detailed exploration about how quality is achieved throughout business process and looking into ways in which operations can be improved to make a difference to both profit, productivity and quality of product.

International Accounting and Finance

This module is an introduction to the world of accounting and finance which will leave students with a clear understanding of the financial principles needed for running businesses, managing budgets and gaining finance.

International Strategic and Technology Management

Senior management within large organisations develop strategies for the deployment of new technologies, internal innovation, changes in the market place as well as disruptive competition. This course explores the design and deployment of these strategies through case studies.

Business Research Methods

A detailed explanation of research methodology and statistics which is designed to improve research quality in the final projects/dissertations.

Managing People and Organisations

Main topics of study: nature of organisations and their development and effectiveness; the role of the engineering manager and the contingency theory of management; learning organisations and the role of innovation; managing innovation including organisational culture in a global business environment; motivation and managing high performing teams; managing change and designing organisations that support creativity and innovation.

Sustainable Power Generation

This course considers at a high-level the principles behind renewable energy sources (tidal, wind, hydro, nuclear) and how they can be harnessed to provide electricity in a practical manner. It will outline the key stages in their operation, the energy conversion process and its optimisation, specific issues around electricity storage at times when low output load coincides with high input opportunity, an overview of the operation of the national grid and future trends.

An introduction to corporate governance, ethics and sustainability

Dissertation (Project)

You will learn from highly experienced practitioners, and the course will include input from executives with experience across a range of industries including manufacturing, electronics, finance, media and major consultancies (such as PwC and AD Little Inc). These industry connections have informed the content and design of the course.

Uniquely, the course integrates Technology Strategy with Business Strategy of project-based organisations.

Assessment is carried out by a variety of methods including coursework, examinations and a dissertation.

Entry criteria:

UK Lower Second Class (2:2) Honours degree or equivalent in Science, Engineering, Technology or Management.

English language requirements:

IELTS score of 6.5 with 6.5 in writing and no sub-score below 5.5, for non-native English speaking applicants.
