Two overlapping protein complexes as detected by ClusterONE
Dr Alberto Paccanaro and his team from the Department of Computer Science at Royal Holloway, University of London have developed a new method for identifying cellular machineries (protein complexes) from data about protein interactions.
The method, called ClusterONE, is published in today's Nature Methods. The scientists use data to work out protein complexes and how some proteins can belong to more than one complex.
Dr Paccanaro explains: “Detecting protein complexes is central for our understanding of cellular organisation and function. ClusterONE is the first method that can exploit information about the statistical reliability of the interaction data in order to infer protein complexes, while being able to discover proteins which are shared by more than one complex.”
