Your Training Log

In accordance with the College Code of Practice, each research student should decide, with their supervisor, a programme of research training for the year. This should be recorded on the Research Student's Training Log, available via the Doctoral School webpages.

Doctoral School Training Resources

The College provides the main source of training, via the Researcher Development Programme.  Topics are arranged within six main themes, Research Management and Critical Thinking, Career Development, Entrepreneurship and Ethics, Information Technology, Written Communication and Oral Communication. You are expected to follow a selection of these courses, as part of your PhD training.

Shared Computer Science, ISG and Maths Training Programme

A shared programme of PhD training is organised by the Computer Science, Information Security Group and Mathematics Departments for the Academic Year 2018-19.

The presentations below will take place in McCrea 128, except where noted otherwise:

1.  "Fast and fun results: functional programming for mathematicians”. (Professor Mark Wildon, Maths -- 5 Dec 2018, 15:00 - 17:00). Pre-requisite: Mathematica installed on your laptop.
2. "Matlab for scientific computing" (Dr Alexey Koloydenko, Maths - 12 Dec 2018, 14:00 - 16:00). Note: venue for training is McCrea 103
3. "Plain English" (Professor Chris Mitchell, ISG -- 30 Jan 2019, 14:00-16:00).
4. "Using LaTeX" (Professor Adrian Johnstone, CS -- 6 February 2019, 14:00-16:00).
5. “How to give a presentation” (Dr Hugh Shanahan, CS -- 13 February 2019, 14:00 - 16:00).
6. “How to write a research paper” (Professor Volodya Vovk, CS -- 20 February 2019, 14:00 - 16:00).
7. "How to complete your PhD and have a successful viva” (Professor Kostas Stathis, CS -- 6 March 2019, 14:00-16:00.
8. "Finding research literature" (Dr Martin Albrecht, ISG -- 12 March 2019, 16:00-17:00).

Cakes talks and research seminars

Cakes Talks (informal seminars) and Departmental Research Seminars are given by research students within the Department, and the one-day Annual Postgrad Colloquium, held each June, gives everyone an opportunity to present their research.

International Students

Royal Holloway International offers Academic English language courses and one-to-one tutorials in a range of areas..

Postgraduate training courses off campus:

The EPSRC run 3-4 day residential/non-residential Graduate Schools under their UK GRADschools Programme, and require all EPSRC funded PhD students to attend in their second or third years of study.
