Cool Computing 2014

The 2014 Cool Computing competition took place on Wednesday 26th February as part of the UCAS Open Day. Three entries were submitted, all of excellent quality, to be judged by 18 prospective students.

The winner was a joint effort by second-year students Atanas Penev and Slav Danchev (right) who presented their arcade game Spektrum, a good demonstration of the capabilities of Microsoft XNA. The audience awarded Spektrum 17 out of 20 for coolness while Carlos Matos gave 8 out of 10 for academic relevance. Bob Vickers gave it 9 out of 10 for maintainability.

Atanas and Slav are therefore this year's joint winners and share the trophy plus a cheque for £120.

In second place was Jack Hopkins, a third-year student. His java program  Evolution simulates an environment in which a variety of different organisms evolve in competition with each other. Evolution was awarded 16 out of 20 for coolness, 8 out of 10 for academic relevance and 9 out of 10 for maintainability. Jack wins a runner-up prizes of £60.

In third place was Feargus Pendlebury who presented an implementation of John Conway's famous Game of Life. It was awarded 10 out of 20 for coolness, 9 out of 10 for academic relevance and 10 out of 10 for maintainability.

Many thanks and congratulations to all for their hard work and ingenuity.
