Computer Science Linux service

The Department of Computer Science runs a Linux service for the benefit of its students, and this is available to BIS students.

Usernames and passwords

CompSci has its own independent password system. Your username is the same as your college one, but passwords are not synchronised and will be different if you only change it on one system. Passwords must be between 10 and 60 characters and must not be all-alphabetic or all numeric.

Connecting to the service

  •  McCrea 103 has terminals configured to connect directly. Just select
Teaching - Linux for CompSci Teaching
    at the startup menu.

  • In Labs run by the IT department (including McCrea 216) you must login to Windows first, and then run some special software called nxclient. This can be found under

    All Programs...
    Academic applications...
    Computer Science...
    NX Client for Windows...
    Config...
    NXclient for Windows ..
  • You can also install nxclient on your home computer and connect from anywhere on the Internet. See www.cs.rhul.ac.uk/Internal/Computers/handbook/node7.html for more information.

Logging out

It is important to logout when you have finished. Click the Exit icon at the bottom right of the screen.
