Eduardo Boechat

PhD (Classics), Lecturer at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro

Why did you choose Royal Holloway for your degree?

I actually completed my Masters at UCL (University College London) but Professor Jonathan Powell from Royal Holloway's Classics department supervised my final dissertation. Once I had decided to pursuit a doctoral degree it seemed clear to me that he was the right professional to guide me. I also had some of my Masters classes in Egham, and I knew that the campus was just fantastic, and really not far from London. Moreover, I got on straight away with the department administrative staff. For a South American like me the sort of human touch I met there counted a lot!

How did your time at Royal Holloway help your future career?

I think I could say that my academic career really started at Royal Holloway. I taught there right from the beginning of my PhD, and carried on teaching even after concluding the degree. I have always known that that degree would look great on my CV, and the international reputation of the College obviously helped me a lot in getting the academic post I hold now. Now, the academic life in the college is excellent according to any standard. The library provision could have come out of a dream! All the researchers (at least in my field, Classics) undertake pioneer studies.

What do you do now and what advice would you give to anyone thinking about a career in your sector?

I now teach Latin language and literature at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. It is difficult to give advice when it comes to decisions such as career, but all I can say is that the serious study of Classics will always be important and required.
