City in the City: Proposed Books

The project proposes four main volumes

a.    Rome and the English Urban Imagination  A of Rome in the discourses of the new municipalities, drawing on research in the Northern cities, the newspapers, and the debates in the nineteenth century political and social pamphleteers.

b.    Imagining Roman London. A case study looking at the presentation and imagining of Londinium in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

c.     Translating Cities: The Urban Heritage and the Making of Modern Urbanism. Edited volume of papers from a workshop on the historical imagination and the development of urbanism (international focus)

d.   Citizen Cities: Classical Urbanism in Political and Social Thought (1870-Present). A volume looking at the way in which political thinking about the city has been influenced by the ideals of the Classical city, especially the Greek polis, and the failure of other models of Classical urbanism, in particular the city of Rome.
