Scholarship: Africa and End of the Roman Republic. Professor Richard Alston gave a paper in the Department of Classics in Manchester last Thursday. The paper examined the political economy of Roman Italy and asked how and why the political crises of the late first century were tied to the economic structures of Italy. Richard argued that rather than looking at nineteenth-century experience of social disruption and revolution for our models, we should instead look at the urban-rural discontent of contemporary Africa to discover explanations for why the soldiers drove the Republic to its end.
