Reid Scholarship for PhD candidates announced

We’re pleased to announce a Reid Scholarship for PhD study in the Classics Department at Royal Holloway, for three years starting in January 2014. We’re looking for an outstanding PhD applicant in any area of Classical studies, with an excellent academic record and potential for high achievement in the PhD and beyond. 

We’re particularly interested to receive applications in any of the principal areas of research strength in the department, i.e oratory and rhetoric ancient and modern; the reception of Graeco-Roman antiquity; classical archaeology and architectural reconstruction; Greek and Latin language and literature; Greek and Roman history and ancient philosophy. The value of the award for full-time students is £15,726 per annum maintenance award, plus remission of fees at the Home/EU rate, for three years. The award is also available on a pro rata basis for part-time study. For further details please see here.

Candidates will be expected to start their PhD research in January 2014. We regret it will not be possible to defer entry. 

All candidates for the award must have applied for a PhD place at Royal Holloway no later than 31 October 2013. Click here for the College application process.

There is no separate application form for the award, but expressions of interest, including a copy of the research proposal, should be sent by email to the Director of Graduate Studies, Professor J.G.F Powell no later than 31 October. You’re strongly recommended to consult your prospective supervisor as well as the Director of Graduate Studies in advance of your application.

In making a nomination, the committee will take into account the information provided in the application including academic qualifications, but will have particular regard to the potential of the research proposal. A nomination will be made soon after 31 October and applicants will be informed as soon as possible.
