Professor John F. Healy

Posted on 15/06/2012

It is with great sadness that the Department announces the death of John F. Healy, former Professor of Greek and the first Chair of the Classics Department after the merger of Bedford College and Royal Holloway.

Professor Healy's research interests spanned the areas of archaeology, numismatics, and ancient technology and science. He published numerous articles in a range of journals (including Nature and other scientific journals). One should note at least three of his authoritative books: Mining and Metallurgy in the Greek and Roman World (1978, revised and enlarged in 1993), Sylloge Numorum Graecorum, vii: Manchester University Museum (1986), and Pliny the Elder on Science and Technology (1999).
