Funding for Research Activities

The Classics Department has a small amount of money available for funding research activities.

Activities that we would consider funding are

  • Attending conferences in the UK or abroad
  • Travel to sites/libraries/museums
  • Necessary research expenses for access to collections/manuscripts or for photography

Funding is normally limited to £250 in an academic year.

Funding is at the discretion of the graduate studies committee. If you require funding, apply in advance by e-mail to the Director of Graduate Studies and through completion of the form

We will not normally fund attendance at a conference when the student is not presenting a paper, but will look favourably upon instances when a paper is being presented. A special case would have to be made to support attendance only.

Techne funded students should approach Techne in the first instance to meet research expenses.

Only agreed expenses will be met and only on production of receipts.

There is a small (and as yet unknown) amount of money available to support travel outside the UK. Please contact the Director of Graduate Studies should you be planning a research-related trip.

If you are an AHRC/Techne funded student, you should approach Techne in the first instance for funding.

The Departmental Research Committee will consider bids for student's to run activities, such as seminars, conferences, or to bring a speaker to London or Egham. We will also consider events which have 'impact' outside the academic community (public engagement/museums/cultural institutitons) There is flexibility in meeting such requests and in the levels of funding that might be provided.

Students wishing to put together an event should contact their supervisor and/or the Director of Graduate Studies at an early stage. Requests that have more than one student leading the event will be looked on with greater favour.

If you have doubt as to whether we might support your trip/event, ask!
