Below are a few introductory notes on thinking about suitable careers. Our best resources are available on the Careers & Employability Moodle. Click the "Deciding on a Career" section and look for "Our guide to choosing a Career".

-------

In the very simplest terms, there are two elements in choosing a career*:

  1. You
  2. The job

To get the right match you need to know about both.

* (Of course, many other factors influence career choice, but these two are good starting points)

Ask yourself about...

...your strengths

  • What do you love/hate doing (at uni and in your spare time)?
  • What are you good at?
  • Think of the last few times you were really engaged in something - what were you doing?

...your values

How important to you is:

  • Wealth?
  • Helping others?
  • Winning?
  • The respect of others?
  • Making a difference in the world?
  • Being the best you can possibly be?
  • What else is/is not important to you?

...your lifestyle preferences

Which of the two environments would you rather be in?

  • High-pressure OR slow-and-steady?
  • Routine OR constant change?
  • Office based OR outdoors or on-site?
  • Creative OR structured?
  • Social OR alone?
  • Which other environments appeal/do not appeal?

What next?

The questions above are just the beginning. On the Careers & Employability Moodle click the "Deciding on a Career" section and look for "Our guide to choosing a Career".

Gaining as much experience as you can is one of the best ways to learn about yourself, so get stuck in to work experience and extracurricular activities!

Once you feel you have a clear idea of your strengths, values and preferences, take a look at how to explore your options.
