Placements and industry links

The School seeks to make connections with a number of external organisations to enable students to gain valuable work experience.

Third year research projects may be carried out in local industrial or research institute laboratories. Final year biology projects may be field-based including butterfly diversity in Honduras, starfish ecology in Indonesia and Eucalyptus biofuel production in China.

On all our courses students benefit from specialist teaching from external professionals including from the Veterinary Laboratory Agency, the world-renowned London University Institutes of Neurology and Child Health as well as clinical staff from local hospitals.

We encourage our students to take up summer placements in industrial or research institute laboratories, such as those of the nearby Veterinary Laboratory Agency or CABI Bioscience. Biomedical Sciences students may choose summer placements in clinical laboratories.

We have offered projects at the Natural History Museum, Thames Water and GSK as well as internships at Whipsnade, Millennium Seed Bank and the MRC unit in Leicester.

If you would like to spend a year abroad, we have strong links with universities in the USA, Australia and Canada.

The School works in collaboration and has contacts with Chrysal Flowers, Humber Growers, VHB Herbs, Finlays Flowers and World Flowers, Sangamo biosciences, MRC Harwell, Cellectis genome research, Benitec Biopharma, Wyeth (now part of Pfizer), AVI Biopharma (now Sarepta Therapeutics),  Shire biopharmaceuticals, PlasmidFactory, Inovio vaccines, Genzyme (a Sanofi Company), RegenX biosciences, Amsterdam Molecular Therapeutics (AMT now UniQure), Okairos vaccines and IBET biotechnology research.

Case studies

“The highlights of the placement were the new and exciting things I witnessed which I had never witnessed anywhere else before. Every day had in store something exciting to look forward to which is what made the placement enjoyable the most. My overall highlight was surely seeing the birth of a baby, it’s definitely the most beautiful thing I have ever seen”

Intern @ Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital, East Kent

“The luxury of having a micro-placement is you are there to gain an experience; therefore every day is different and aimed to showcase the broad array of work undertaken. Key activities on the site include research into discovery of new active ingredients (AIs), new formulation technologies to develop products from existing AIs and technical support of product ranges”

Intern @ Syngenta AG - Jealott's Hill International Research Centre
