Aims and objectives

The PROCAR project aims to exploit Xanthophyllomyces as a production platform for the high-value carotenoids zeaxanthin and phytoene. To achieve this aim the following objectives will be carried out:

  1.  A genome-scale metabolic network reconstruction (GSMR) of Xanthophyllomyces for improved carotenoid production will be created.

  2. Use modern genetic intervention procedures to generate novel zeaxanthin and phytoene producing strains of Xanthophyllomyces.

  3. Optimisation of fermentation and down-stream processing procedures for the production of zeaxanthin and phytoene.

  4. Use existing and new prototype Xanthophyllomyces strains to perform technical and economic feasibility studies for the production of zeaxanthin and phytoene.

  5. Deliver and implement a business model/strategy for Xanthophyllomyces as a renewable source of zeaxanthin and phytoene.
