Baroness Fookes is is a Conservative Life Peer in the House of Lords and prior to 1997 she was Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons. She began her career as a teacher before becoming Conservative MP for Merton and Morden in 1970. Janet moved to Plymouth Drake as MP in 1974, where she gained a professional interest in the armed services. She retired from the Commons when the 1997 election was called and was created a Life Peer in the Resignation Honours. Janet is President of the War Widows' Association and an Honorary Member of the Forces Pension Society. Among many public roles, she was Chairman of the Council of the RSPCA.
