Professional Services

The Chief Operating Officer and Secretary to Council, Dr David Ashton, has overaching responsibility for the Professional Services.

Academic Registry: Anna Sendall

 

Registry provides the administrative and professional support for the academic provision. This includes: 

  • oversight and development of academic regulations and policies
  • maintenance of academic standards
  • professional development for teaching staff including support for e-learning 
  • academic study skills support for taught students and English Language support for international students
  • central student administrative services, which includes managing key events such as enrolment, formal examinations and graduation ceremonies as well as running the Student Services Centre, which provides a dedicated single point of contact for all non-academic student queries.

The Careers Service offers:

Commercial Services: Gillian Almond  

Commercial Services is the College’s largest department, providing a wide range of services to staff and students as well as visitors and conference clients. As a team they manage many of the campus services offered such as catering and accommodation. They are also responsible for generating revenue by marketing the College’s facilities for conferences and events when they are not being used by our students.

Marketing and Communications: Marie Ennis

Communications and External Relations work to strengthen Royal Holloway’s presence and reputation in an increasingly global and competitive market. Our professional team engages with colleagues across the College in leading and coordinating a wide range of activities, including press and public relations, championing the Royal Holloway brand through marketing and communications, developing our web and new media activities, organising and promoting College events and supporting the development of key partnerships locally.

Information Technology: Robert Westcott 

Estates: Mike Berry

The Estates Department is responsible for the management of and improvement to the entire physical estate – developed and undeveloped. Our estate covers over 45 hectares and more than 80 buildings on the campus distributed north and south of the A30, as well as our off-campus residences at Kingswood. We also lease Huntersdale from the Crown Estate and 11 Bedford Square in London from the University of London. Funding for Major Projects (typically over £100,000) is allocated on approval of a business case for each specific project whilst approximately £2 million a year is allocated to legislative, cyclical and small works, as prioritised during the Planning Round.

Finance: Stephen Avery 

The Finance function covers payroll, payments (suppliers, staff expenses etc), student fee collection, loans and maintenance grants, cashiering and banking, financial reporting and monitoring. Management Accounts provides general support to departments and budget/fund holders. Support for externally funded research projects is provided by the Research Finance team. The Procurement team provides advice and procurement expertise and coordinates purchasing activities, which are undertaken within departments or through specialist functions such as Computer Services and Campus Services.

Health & Safety: Matt Purcell

Our work is related to all aspects of Health and Safety for the staff and student population. Members of staff in the College Health and Safety Office provide comprehensive advice and assistance across the broad subject of occupational health and safety, including fire safety. This includes the detailed interpretation and application of health and safety legislation, covering specific subjects such as policy formulation and the management of risk relating to a wide range of topics.

Human Resources: Gillian Hemus 

The Human Resources (HR) Department offers advice and support on all matters relating to employment in the College. The Department has three distinct areas of expertise: Partnerships and Advice, HR Operations, and Organisation Development. Each area works closely together to provide a comprehensive HR service to the College. Each Faculty and Department has an allocated HR Business Partner, Officer, and Assistant who should be the first point of contact for the majority of queries.

Library Services: John Tuck

Royal Holloway Library Services is located on two sites within easy walking distance of each other. The Founder’s Library (Languages, Literatures, Cinema, Theatre, Fine Arts and Music) is located within the Founder’s Building. The Archives service and collections are also in this building and provide access to unique papers and materials relating to the history and development of the College. 

The Bedford Library, opened in 1993, houses resources for Science, the social sciences including Economics and Management, and a large History collection. Both libraries provide a variety of study environments allowing for group work through to silent study, and the entry floor of Bedford Library is known as tlc@bedford, which is an IT-rich social learning space launched in 2008.

Research and Enterprise: Tony Greenwood

We provide proactive support to help academic departments enhance and diversify the sources of their research and commercial income from grants, consultancy, licensing, industrial/commercial research sponsorship and spin-outs. We also provide operational grant application support, guidance, costing as well as intellectual property and contracts advice and services. In addition, we provide incubation services and accommodation for business start-ups within the Enterprise Centre and support for personal entrepreneurship development throughout the College.

Secretariat: (To be appointed) 

The Secretariat provides administrative and professional support for Council and its Committees, ensures compliance with information legislation and provides professional support for the consideration of serious non-academic matters, including those relating to students. The secretariat also offers legal support for contracts, agreements and related matters.

Internal Audit services are provided to the College by an external provider reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer and Secretary to Council. Through independent appraisal they provide assurance and best practice advice on the College’s activities, especially on the arrangements for risk management, value for money, control and governance.

Strategic Planning and Change: Julia Roberts 

The Strategic Planning and Change Team provides management information and evidence-based insights to support your decision-making and the development of your plans.

We also mange major strategic projects and provide project management guidance and support to colleagues across the College.

Student Recruitment and Partnerships: Sheryl Simon

The Directorate of Student Recruitment and Partnerships is responsible for recruitment of home/EU and international students, admissions and applicant management and institutional partnership development for the College.

Student Life: Mike Johnson 

The Student Life Team oversees the non-academic Student Experience at the College and report to the Director of Student Experience. Non-academic Student Experience performance is reported to and monitored by the recently established Student Life Committee, and the Student Welfare and Support Committee. 

The Student Life Team manages & coordinates:

  • Welcome Week, induction & transition activity (including Re-Welcome Week in January)
  • Residential Support 
  • Peer Guidance Scheme 
  • Campus Life Programme
  • Celebration Week 
  • Student surveys and feedback
  • Student experience projects.
