The UK economy is on the road to recovery according to a leading economic expert and visiting professor at Royal Holloway, University of London.

Speaking at a special lecture at Royal Holloway yesterday, 16 November, Dr Andrew Sentance, a visiting professor in Economics and external member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, said: “evidence suggests the UK economy has moved on to a recovery track and growth has resumed in the second half of this year”.

Around 300 researchers, students and university leaders attended the event in the college’s Windsor Building. Dr Sentance said: "As policy-makers, we are hopefully now moving from the role of fire-fighters in the recession to a more familiar role - steering the economy through an upswing underpinned by low inflation."

He praised Royal Holloway’s economics department which he went on to say: “has gone from strength to strength establishing itself in the top 10 in the UK for research. I was very honoured last year when my association with Royal Holloway was acknowledged with an Honorary Doctorate of Science (Econ).”

Professor Adam Tickell, Vice-Principal at Royal Holloway, who opened last night’s proceedings, said: “We were delighted to welcome Dr Sentance and this is a wonderful endorsement of our excellence in economics.”
