On Friday 24 October, over 160 students from Royal Holloway, University of London volunteered their time to help local community projects as part of annual  ‘Make a Difference Day’.

The initiative saw 13 projects take place across Egham, Englefield Green, Staines and Ashford, including an allotment project with Age UK, litter picking in Englefield Green, gardening and painting at Thorpe Lea Primary School and creating a poppy garden at Thomas Knyvett College.

The students completed over 500 hours of volunteering, with a number of clubs and societies taking part including the men’s rugby team, the basketball team, the women’s football team, the dance society and the classical society.

Anna Yiovanaki, Community Action Volunteer Coordinator said: “This is a wonderful initiative for our students to get involved with. We had more volunteers than last year! We are pleased that they are so passionate and always keen to help in the local community. I am very proud of the commitment shown during Make a Difference Day.”

Royal Holloway Community Action is a programme of collaborative projects with local community organisations and exists to connect, train and support staff and students seeking to volunteer in the local area. It currently has more than 2,000 registered volunteers and over 200 community partners.
