Today (19 September) marks the launch of Freshers’ Week when thousands of new students are welcomed to the College for their first year of study at Royal Holloway, University of London.
Freshers’ Week offers new students the chance to make new friends and familiarise themselves with their new surroundings before the start of the academic year.
To coincide with the Freshers’ arrival, the revamped Students' Union officially opened its doors today after work was carried out during the summer to provide a fresh and exciting space for students to enjoy. The facelift comprises of a newly refurbished upper floor with dedicated social space and the reconfiguration of Tommy's Bar, Reception areas, main toilets and administration areas.
Sean O’Donnell, SU General Manager, said: “We’re particularly delighted to welcome the intake of 2011/12 Freshers at this exciting time in the development of the Students' Union. We have a fantastic new social space which we have been working hard over the summer to complete in time for the Freshers’ arrival. Enjoy!”
The Students' Union has set up a number of activities and events to help welcome Freshers’ and help them make new friends. Daniel Lemberger-Cooper, President of the Students' Union, said: “There are a wide range of fantastic activities taking place during Freshers’ Week to welcome new students; these include the media fair, the sports and societies fairs, as well as taster sessions, the conga against the cuts, and entertainment every evening in the SU building and Medicine! Pop into the refurbished Students’ Union building to find out more – get involved!”
There are volunteers on hand in the SU building and at help points around the campus and free coffee mornings all week in Imagine from 10.30am - 12.30pm where Freshers can speak to volunteers and make new friends.
Freshers’ Fair on Thursday and Friday is also a key opportunity for students to sign up to the many clubs and sports activities as well as finding out about volunteering opportunities.
