Santa's little helpers: Students volunteer to help spread Christmas cheer to elderly

Posted on 13/12/2013

Royal Holloway students are appealing to staff and local residents to donate warm clothing and festive treats to elderly people in the community as part of their Santa’s Workshop initiative.

With Christmas just around the corner, volunteers from Royal Holloway’s Community Action team have set up a collection point in their new pop-up shop in Egham High Street.

On Tuesday 17 December, the students will hold a special workshop to wrap seasonal parcels stuffed with donations, including chocolates, mince pies and Christmas crackers, before delivering them to elderly residents in Egham and Englefield Green.

“Our annual Santa’s Workshop is always a great success and we know that our parcels are really appreciated by those who are isolated and vulnerable over Christmas”, said Phil Simcock, Community Action Volunteer Manager at Royal Holloway. “We hope that shoppers will continue their generous support and make a donation in our pop-up shop this week!”

Students and staff at Royal Holloway have already been getting into the Christmas spirit by donating more than 250 items to collection points across the campus.

Working alongside Age UK, student volunteers will head into the community to deliver the parcels on Wednesday 18 December.
