A student from Royal Holloway, University of London will have the honour of carrying the Olympic flame during the torch relay.

Katherine Trotter, a Criminology and Sociology student, is one of 8,000 inspirational people who have been asked to carry the Olympic flame as it journeys across the UK. She was nominated by Great Britain Canoe Team in recognition of her dedication and success at canoeing.

LOCOG have pledged the torch relay – which will be travelling through Egham tomorrow – will travel to within an hour of 95 per cent of people in the UK on its way to London. Katherine will be carrying the torch on the Dover leg.

“I had no idea I had been nominated,” Katherine says. “I received a phone call from someone at LOCOG to tell me and it was a complete surprise. I still wasn’t sure if I would be picked because so many people with great stories had been nominated.”

Katherine began canoeing at the age of 10 after going to a taster session during the school holidays. She was immediately hooked and hasn’t looked back since. She is a member of Royal Holloway’s Student Talented Athlete Recognition Scheme (STARS), which offers support to elite athletes to help them juggle their sporting commitments and study.

Katherine recently won a silver medal at the World Junior Canoeing Championships and will be representing Great Britain in the European Championships under-23s sprint canoe events. She is excited at the chance of watching her fellow athletes competing in the London 2012 Games.

“I’ve got tickets to see the Olympic canoeing races at Dorney Lake, which I’m really excited about. I know some of the canoeing team, so it will be really exciting to watch them compete. I think we have a strong team and think we have a good chance of getting a medal in the men’s 200m. I will be cheering the team on.”

As a future Olympic hopeful, Katherine is delighted at the opportunities the London 2012 Games have provided her with.

“I am part of the Olympic Ambitions scheme, which helps support up and coming athletes,” she says. “I got to meet some Olympic athletes and had a tour of the Olympic Village. It was so inspiring to meet them and realise that what I am working towards is achievable. I’m hoping to make the 2016 Olympic Games and meeting athletes who are achieving what you want is so inspiring.”

Katherine will be carrying the Olympic Flame during the torch relay in Dover on July 18.
