Visiting Creative Writing lecturer and alumna Dr Kate Williams will be talking on BBC Radio 2’s Book Club programme today at 6pm about the debut novel to be published following her one million pound book deal.
Dr Williams took the publishing world by storm with her novel ‘The Pleasures of Men’, which she wrote while studying on the MA Creative Writing course at Royal Holloway, University of London.
When agent Simon Trewin submitted the manuscript to publishers just before 5pm a major bidding war ensued, with Penguin secured the deal by 9.30am the next day offering Dr Williams one million pounds in a two book deal.
‘The Pleasures of Men’ is set in 1840’s London and focuses on a girl who becomes obsessed with a serial killer and finds herself entangled in a web of betrayal and murder that not only threatens her but the lives of those around her.
Speaking at the time of securing the deal, Dr Williams said: “I wanted to explore the underworld the Victorians tried to hide. When I started writing, the story possessed me.
“I’m really thrilled and am looking forward to seeing it on the book shelves. I have really loved the MA course at Royal Holloway and the input of my tutors and fellow students has been so invaluable.”
