Three Royal Holloway sporting stars have been competing at an international level with the help of College alumni after receiving grants from the Annual Fund.
Students Fiona Jones, Victoria Mullin and Jennifer McGeever were able to represent Great Britain in their respective sporting disciplines this summer after each receiving a grant of £400.
The Annual Fund was set up in 1998 enabling alumni and friends of the College to pledge support for specific projects or broad categories.
The grants provided to Fiona, Victoria and Jennifer helped to cover the cost of competing in competitions abroad.
Fiona Jones, a History undergraduate, competed in the European University Judo Championships in Sarajevo, finishing second place.
Victoria Mullin, who is studying Geography at the College, qualified in 36th place in the Women's 10m Air Pistol event at the World Universities Games in Shenzhen, China, and Jenny McGeever, who is completing a science foundation course, made it to the last 64 in the Fencing Epee at the Games.
Fiona explained that the help of the Annual Fund is invaluable if she is to progress in Judo at an international level. “The competitions are very expensive, especially if they are abroad,” she said. “I need to compete successfully at a European level to stand a chance at being selected for the Under 23s European squad. At the moment my parents are supporting me paying for the competitions and I have a part time job at Asda, but it is a strain. This money definitely helps relieve the burden.”
Mark Hyndman, Sports Development Executive at the College, added: “The additional financial support provided by the Annual Fund is testament to the ongoing support by the College and our alumni community in helping these students reach their full potential whilst they continue to study full-time. All three have aspirations to compete in Rio 2016 and international competitions such as the World University Games are part of their journey to achieve this goal.”
