Dr Nigel Raine, from the School of Biological Sciences, at Royal Holloway, University of London appeared on BBC One’s Countryfile on Sunday (6 May) to discuss possible effects of pesticides on the behaviour of bees.
In the programme Tom Heap investigates the wide range of threats faced by bees in the UK, including an interview with Dr Raine in his laboratory at Royal Holloway.
The interview focussed on current evidence for pesticide exposure having an impact on bees, and how ongoing research by Dr Raine and his team is exploring new avenues to understand the possible extent of the problem.
Dr Raine said: “Bees are essential pollinators of crops and wildflowers, so it is crucial that we understand why they are declining. Bees are facing a wide range of challenges which makes it hard to pinpoint the major causes of current declines.”
