Dr Kaat Smets

Lecturer in Politics (Quantitative Methods)

Department of Politics and International Relations

Area of expertise

My research focuses on elections and public opinion in Western democracies and I have a special interest in young people's political attitudes and behaviours and how they differ from those of older generations.

I have conducted research on declining levels of voter turnout among young adults, the effects of civic education on young people's political engagement, and am interested in the question of lowering the minimum voting age from 18 to 16 years.

I am able to comment on the European Union and the upcoming EU Referendum.
