Not just a collaboration

The Centre for Asian Theatre and Dance, with the generous support of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, is proud to present a practice-as-research production Not just a collaboration (Bukan Sekedar Kolaborasi) involving two visiting artists-in-residence from Indonesia, Dr Lili Suparli and Bapak Achmad Farmis, together with a group of international Royal Holloway staff and postgraduate students from the Department of Drama, Theatre and Dance and Department of Music.

An ensemble of performers from Indonesia, India, Singapore, Japan, USA and UK confront each other about what it means to collaborate. Some argue that collaboration is amalgamation, others that it can occur only when differences are respected so that reciprocity can occur. Performance materials and anecdotes are shared and miscommunicated. Traditional masks, puppets, dances, gamelan and musical pieces are tapped, and materials and costumes are animated. Singing, dancing and playing together, we enquire into cultural difference in a time of rapid globalization and Brexiting.

With Lili Suparli, Achmad Farmis, Amin Farid, Satkirti Sinha, Sally Dean, Tomoko Hata, Matthew Isaac Cohen and friends.
