Royal Holloway is proud to have been selected as one of only two London 2012 Satellite Villages at next year’s 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games hosting the world’s elite rowers and sprint canoeists on campus.
More than 1,400 athletes and officials will be staying in university accommodation during the Olympic and Paralympic Games and will be transported by coach to nearby Dorney Lake, in Eton, where the Rowing and Canoe Sprint events will be held.
The College held two test events this summer, the World Junior Rowing Championships and a Sprint Canoe test event – the latter of which was held specifically to test the infrastructure ahead of the Games.
In becoming a London 2012 Satellite Village, there will the opportunity for a number of improvements to the College, including a customer lift in the Hub enabling guest access to the third floor accommodation.
Staff and student volunteers will be involved in looking after the athletes for the duration of their stay, with catering staff preparing specially prepared meals to meet their nutrition needs and students taking athletes to their rooms and being on hand to answer questions they may have during their stay.
Professor Geoff Ward, Vice Principal (Students and Staff), said: “This is a wonderful opportunity and an honour for Royal Holloway to be selected to become the Rowing and Canoe Sprint Village. It is our opportunity to be involved in one of the largest sporting events in the world and will create a lasting legacy for the College.”
