Athletes from Royal Holloway, University of London got a taste of what it will be like for Olympic competitors this summer as they took part in the London Prepares series.
Darren March, Giacomo (Jack) Valeri, Isabel Brinsden, and Jade Phillips were among competitors taking part in the BUCS Visa Outdoor Athletics Championships which were held at the Olympic Stadium as part of the test events ahead of the London 2012 Games.
The championships took place over four days with Darren and Giacomo competing in the Triple Jump, Isabel competing in the 5,000m and Jade competing in the 100m.
Although he found competing at the Olympic stadium “overwhelming” Giacomo said: “The atmosphere was lively and encouraging even though only a relatively small section of the stands were open.
“The facilities at the stadium were excellent as well, and the organisation of the whole event was surprisingly efficient. I'd say that the organisers did a fantastic job of accommodating athletes and spectators which I'm sure will be replicated in the games themselves.”
He added: “I was really pleased with my performance in the qualifying round of the triple jump, jumping a season's best of 14.34 and qualifying comfortably. Unfortunately I picked up a minor injury which hindered my performance in the final slightly, but I was still happy with my overall performance considering the scale of the event.”
Although they missed out on bringing home the medals, all four students progressed in their respective disciplines.
Mark Hyndman, Sports Development Executive at Royal Holloway, said: “The BUCS Athletics Championships presented a great opportunity for students to compete at the Olympic Stadium. It was a great moment seeing Royal Holloway students dominating heat qualifications in their respective disciplines before Saturday’s main event. All four were great ambassadors for the College and although they didn’t all get the results they were looking for, I’m sure they will remember this experience for the rest of the lives.”
