Flags are flying outside the accommodation blocks where the athletes are staying during the Games

More than 850 athletes and officials have now arrived on campus at Royal Holloway, University of London ahead of tonight’s official Olympic Opening Ceremony in London, including teams from Germany, Japan and Mexico.

In total more than 1,400 competitors and staff will be staying in university accommodation during the Olympic and Paralympic Games and will be transported by coach to nearby Dorney Lake, in Eton, where the Rowing and Canoe Sprint events will be held. The first rowing event will take place tomorrow (28 July).

All the athletes will all have arrived at the satellite Rowing and Canoe Village at Royal Holloway by 5 August, ahead of the canoe sprint relay on 6 August.

The Indian rowing team described the ambience at Royal Holloway as “wonderful” and Village Manager Miriam Luke added: “The Village here at Royal Holloway looks amazing. All the games makers have worked incredibly hard to turn the site into a welcoming and relaxing village for the teams. But the athletes will also be venturing out of the village and you may bump into them in the campus store. We know they’ll enjoy their stay here and everyone’s very excited for the start of the Games.”
