Shaw is studying BSc Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) with a year in industry
For Shaw, being offered help by way of a scholarship to enable him to study at Royal Holloway was priceless. During his time at secondary school, he gained a fascination with psychology, particularly to do with mental health, which combined with his interest in computer science lead him to discover artificial intelligence.
It wasn't until he was studying for his A levels when he learned that someone dear to him suffered from chronic pain and he decided that he wanted to undertake research in this area and develop a new or improved treatment of cure that would benefit them. Unfortunately, coming from a disadvantaged background, the debt from student loans as well as a maintenance loan for a minimum of four years, was a massive barrier for him to reach his goals. That's why he applied for the Future Leaders Scholarship.
"Receiving the scholarship was one the most exciting moments I've ever had, it was one of those events where you were so shocked you couldn't speak."
Shaw being granted the scholarship meant that he was alleviated from the heavy financial burden of debt and he is now in a position to consider post-graduate study, an idea that would have been near impossible for him to attain.
"One of my main goals is to do research to help my friend's living conditions as she currently suffers from a plethora of neurological disorders with chronic pain being one of them. So you can imagine to hear that I had been awarded a scholarship filled me with relief, joy and a sense of peace."
"The heavy financial burden of education has been lifted allowing me to focus better on my studies, personal development and goal of developing treatment... I once again send my gratitude and promise to ensure your investment in me will not go to waste."Support students like Shaw
