A Royal Holloway degree comes with real added value. Through our determination to help you succeed, our unique combination of excellent research and teaching, and our supportive, inspiring community, you’ll develop skills that will start you on the journey of finding out what really matters to you.
We’re committed to providing each individual with chances to develop in whatever way is most meaningful to you. For undergraduates starting with us in 2019, we’re extending some of the exciting opportunities already on offer. These will contribute to your experience and add even more value to your studies.
Develop wider skills and broaden your education
You can choose to take a multidisciplinary unit outside of your home department, instead of one of the more traditional options, in your second year.
These special units are designed to enable you to explore wider skills in an area that covers current issues in the global environment. Immersing yourself in areas outside your degree programme will help you to stand out from the crowd and make you even more attractive to future employers.
Please note, there may occasionally be a reason why you can’t replace a usual departmental unit, for instance if a professional body qualification prevents you from doing so. In this case, you can still take one of the multidisciplinary options, but as an ‘extra’ to your other studies.
Take a Placement Year, studying, working and volunteering
Our flexible degree programmes enable you to apply to take a Placement Year, which can be spent studying abroad, working or taking part in a humanitarian project. You can even do all three if you want to!
You take the year out after your second year (or third year if you are on an MSci or MEng programme).
The year out contributes to your overall degree and will be shown on your degree certificate.
You apply to take the Placement Year after you have joined us, not before. You’ll need to make your application in the autumn term of your second year.
You’ll largely need to find the placement or project yourself, but we’ll be here to support you with ideas. Whether you are paid for the placement or project you undertake depends on the individual terms of the arrangement.
Support before and during your year out
Over the months leading up to your year out, you’ll follow a special preparatory programme, which you’ll be able to fit in around your studies. It’ll cover things like how to handle living and studying abroad, being work-ready, cultural workshops, visa advice, training and advice on working in the voluntary sector.
You’ll also have continued access to services and support while you are away.
Fees and financial information
You’ll be charged 20% of your usual tuition fee for the year. This covers the preparatory programme, continued access to support and services at Royal Holloway, an assessment visit if you are in the UK (if you’re overseas we’ll do this via Skype) and guidance on the project you’ll need to complete.
It’s important to know that you’ll be responsible for all other costs during your year out e.g. living costs, travel etc.
You can get up to four years of tuition fee and maintenance loans if you are eligible. We advise you to check if you are joining a degree programme which is already four years long.
You’ll need to get specific advice depending on your visa and where/how you want to spend your year out. If you are sponsored, you will need to speak to your funder.
