RHUL Annual Sustainability Lecture 2013

Shaun McCarthy OBE

"London 2012 – Sustainable Legacy?"

Shaun McCarthy OBE

Shaun McCarthy was Chair of the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 www.cslondon.org from 2006 to 2013, during which time he developed and delivered a ground-breaking assurance body that was instrumental in making London 2012 the most sustainable Games ever and acting as an example of best practice from around the world. He was awarded an OBE in Her Majesty the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2013.

Abstract

In this presentation, Shaun will describe the background to the Commission and some of the challenges he faced in developing a body offering unprecedented levels of transparency, working with, and often challenged by government bodies, global corporations and NGOs. He will share personal anecdotes about reporting directly to high profile figures such as London Mayors Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson, Lord Coe and Dame Tessa Jowell. He will conclude by providing his 'warts and all' independent perspective on the successes and failures of a sustainable London 2012, and give his views on whether London 2012 left a sustainable legacy or really inspired a generation to more sustainable practices.
